By 2017, the demand for butadiene will reach 4.2 million t/a in China, at that time the capacity will be 4.95 million t/a. In the future, the manufacture of SBR and butadiene rubber will still be two largest uses of butadiene, and the consumption of butadiene for the production of nitrile rubber will increase rapidly.

Economic growth throughout the Asia-Pacific over the past six months led to a rise in the consumption of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel booming vehicle use and industrial growth, especially in China. Oil prices peaked at US$116.75 on September 9, 2013, before bottoming at US$103.08 a barrel on November 7 and then fluctuating upwards.Global oil demand rose slowly in the second half of 2013, due to slow economic recovery and tight oil supply due to sanctions on Iran.The stock prices of the top ten leading Asia-Pacific oil and natural gas companies by revenues rose by an average of 5.16% over the six months to December 31, 2013.The rate of Asia-Pacific oil and gas mergers and acquisitions (M&A) picked up slowly over the six months under review, amid a slowdown in the global economy and sanctions on Iranian oil.

Asian economies remained soft over the past six months. The Philippines imported more rice after Super Typhoon Haiyan destroyed crops in November 2013, while India’s Food Safety destroyed crops and Standards Authority (FSSAI) blocked processed food shipments as they did not comply with labeling requirements. Most leading companies in the sector experienced moderate growth in sales and profitability in the latter half of 2013, fueled by higher overseas demand.Leading F&B companies faced less-impressive share performance. The average stock price of the leading food and beverage companies in the Asia-Pacific by revenues as tracked by Mergent increased by 7.24% over the six months period from August 8, 2013 to January 8, 2014. Merger and acquisition activity remained active throughout the six months, as companies sought economies of scale, aiming to maximize operating efficiencies and enhance market visibility. Initial Public Offerings (IPO) activity surged in the latter half of 2013 and was expected to remain active over the next six months.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recorded a 5.4% expansion of global demand in international markets, a slightly faster rate than domestic travel with 4.9%. The strongest overall growth, domestic and international combined, was recorded by carriers in the Middle East of 11.4% followed by the Asia-Pacific with 7.1%, Latin America 6.3% and Africa 5.2%. The average share prices of six Asia-Pacific airlines tracked by Mergent climbed by 2.88% in the six months from July 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. Airlines continued to invest in service innovations, while strictly controlling unit operating costs to keep air travel affordable. Airlines saw acquisitions and alliances as a means of extending their networks, strengthening their competitiveness and bolstering their financial positions.

The Asia-Pacific chemical industry continued to improve over the last six months, fueled by economic recovery, higher consumer spending and improved standards of living. The total profits of the big six chemicals firms in the region grew by 187.5% during the March to June period. The average stock price of the top six chemical companies by revenues as tracked by Mergent gained 8.7% over the period from June 14, 2013 to January 17, following signs of growth in the region and improvement across commercial construction and electronics end-markets. Threats of feedstock shortages, uncertainties about the economy and slower economic growth left most investors cautious. Nevertheless, joint ventures and acquisitions remained an option for some multinational companies that looked to the region to target new opportunities and optimize their business portfolios.

Companion diagnostic tests are used to identify suitable patients for administering specific drugs and monitoring the prognosis of drug effects on the disease. This concept of combining a drug with a diagnostic test is known as predictive medicine or personalized medicine. A companion diagnostic test has the ability to predict the risks of the disease and monitor its therapeutic response. The tests enable physicians to make decisions on the type of drugs and dosage administration and thereby reduce the mortality rates associated with diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. The demand for companion diagnostic tests is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period. In 2013, the Americas dominated the Global Companion Diagnostics market and it was followed by the EMEA region. Together, these two regions accounted for 90 percent of the market revenue. However, the APAC region is expected to grow at the fastest rate during the forecast period because of the increase in the incidence of infectious diseases, the demand for targeted therapeutics, and the increased adoption of diagnostic products.
