    The decreasing supply, and increasing cost, of fossil-fuel based energy has intensified the search for renewable alternatives. Although traditionally more expensive, renewable energy sources have many incentives, including increased national energy security, decreased carbon emissions, and compliance with renewable energy mandates and air quality regulations. In remote islands where increased shipping costs and economies of scale result in some of the most expensive fossil-fuel based energy in the world, renewable energy sources are particularly attractive. Many islands, including Guam and Hawaii, contain strategic military bases with high energy demands that would greatly benefit from an inexpensive, reliable source of energy independent of the fossilfuel based economy. The oceans are natural collectors of solar energy and absorb billions of watts of energy from the sun in the form of solar radiation daily.

    Security is not only relevant for the operation of the Smart Grid as a critical infrastructure but also very important for user acceptance. This especially affects domains like Smart Metering especially in the part of privacy issues. Many different standards exist in the IEC TC57 portfolio, among them standards especially designed for end-to-end security. Additionally international security standards like ISA 99 or the NERC CIP standards were developed and will be discussed here. Furthermore this chapter describes an overview on previous attacks in the energy domain, existing solutions and security standards, and also insights on security metrics and patterns.

    There is increased recognition that geothermal energy resources are more widespread than previously thought, with potential for providing a significant amount of sustainable clean energy worldwide. Recent advances in drilling, completion, and production technology from the oil and gas industry can now be applied to unlock vast new geothermal resources, with some estimates for potential electricity generation from geothermal energy now on the order of 2 million megawatts. Terralog USA, in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine (UCI), are currently investigating advanced design concepts for paired horizontal well recirculation systems, optimally configured for geothermal energy recovery in permeable sedimentary and crystalline formations of varying structure and material properties. This two-year research project, funded by the US Department of Energy, includes combined efforts for: 1) Resource characterization; 2) Small and large scale laboratory investigations; 3) Numerical simulation at both the laboratory and field scale; and 4) Engineering feasibility studies and economic evaluations.

    The fuel cell (FC) is a source of energy that help to avoid pollution and thus contribute to solutions for global warming. This kind of battery is well known since many decades but its research for improving their efficiency is still in progress. Such battery could also be used for specific applications for example in agriculture where many devices operate in a limited area such as tractors, pumps, transfer systems treadmills of agricultural products. One important parameter among others is the diagnostic of their membranes state using real time humidity measurements to improve their efficiency. In this chapter, the basics of FC are first described and their various parameters described. The importance of humidity and its consequences on the efficiency of the FC are also summarized. The different techniques used for measuring the moisture content of the FC with their advantages and disadvantages are also presented before giving the results of measurements performed by our research team at the Nancy University Henri Poincare.

    This report summarizes the experience and early results from a fuel cell bus demonstration funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the National Fuel Cell Bus Program (NFCBP). A team led by the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium and UTC Power developed a next-generation fuel cell electric bus for demonstration. A total of four buses are being operated in service by Connecticut Transit in Hartford. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has been tasked by FTA to evaluate the buses in service. This report documents the early development and implementation of the buses and summarizes the performance results through May 2012.

    The goal of the project was to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of geopressured-geothermal power development by exploiting the extraordinarily high pressured hot brines know to exist at depth near the Sweet Lake oil and gas field in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The existence of a geopressured-geothermal system at Sweet Lake was confirmed in the 1970's and 1980's as part of DOE's Geopressured-Geothermal Program. That program showed that the energy prices at the time could not support commercial production of the resource. Increased electricity prices and technological advancements over the last two decades, combined with the current national support for developing clean, renewable energy and the job creation it would entail, provided the justification necessary to reevaluate the commercial feasibility of power generation from this vast resource.

    In July 2010, Stark State College (SSC), received Grant DE-EE0003229 from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Golden Field Office, for the development of the electrical and control systems, and mechanical commissioning of a unique 20kW scale high-pressure, high temperature, natural gas fueled Stack Block Test System (SBTS). SSC worked closely with subcontractor, Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems (US) Inc. (RRFCS) over a 13 month period to successfully complete the project activities. This system will be utilized by RRFCS for pre-commercial technology development and training of SSC student interns. In the longer term, when RRFCS is producing commercial products, SSC will utilize the equipment for workforce training.

    Because most sedimentary basins have been explored for oil and gas, well logs, temperatures at depth, and reservoir properties such as depth to basement and formation thickness are well known. The availability of this data reduces exploration risk and allows development of geologic exploration models for each basin. This study estimates the magnitude of recoverable geothermal energy from 15 major known U.S. sedimentary basins and ranks these basins relative to their potential. The total available thermal resource for each basin was estimated using the volumetric heat-in-place method originally proposed by (Muffler, 1979). A qualitative recovery factor was determined for each basin based on data on flow volume, hydrothermal recharge, and vertical and horizontal permeability. Total sedimentary thickness maps, stratigraphic columns, cross sections, and temperature gradient information was gathered for each basin from published articles, USGS reports, and state geological survey reports. When published data were insufficient, thermal gradients and reservoir properties were derived from oil and gas well logs obtained on oil and gas commission databases. Basin stratigraphy, structural history, and groundwater circulation patterns were studied in order to develop a model that estimates resource size, temperature distribution, and a probable quantitative recovery factor.

    Significant federal involvement in solar building technology began with a series of acts of Congress passed in 1974; the Solar Heating and Cooling Demonstration Act; the Energy Reorganization Act; the Solar Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Act; and the Federal Non-Nuclear Energy Research and Development Act. These acts established programs for solar-related research and development in various fields. In 1977, the Department of Energy Reorganization Act established DOE and placed all solar energy programs under its authority. Over the years, the DOE Solar Buildings Technology Program has developed in response to the needs of the building industry and to opportunities opened up by new technology. From 1974 to 1980, a wide range of federal solar activities existed, including scientific research on many different fronts, demonstration projects, market research, design assistance, community programs, professional education, and public information. Since 1980, a smaller federal solar research and development program has emphasized new technology. The Solar Buildings Technology Program currently includes research and development programs in both active and passive solar; this overview focuses on activities in the latter.
