    In addition to the advantages of rapid response, small displaced volume, and high spatial resolution that are common to all nanoscale optical devices, luminescence-based nanosensors can also leverage the intrinsic environmental sensitivity of fluorophores/phosphors and the phenomenon of energy transfer. Their compatibility with standard microscopes and other imaging devices makes them even more attractive for biological and biomedical applications. The reduction in size does, however, also involve some loss of performance, particularly in longevity. In this chapter, the fundamental properties and basic scaling laws of nanoscale fluorescence-based sensors will be discussed, followed by a review of examples of nanosensors and an outlook of the future of these promising devices.

  • 32115.导电碳纳米管纤维和复合材料的应用:气体传感器

    Sensing based on carbon nanotube (CNT) materials has been as area of interest since the material's discovery by Iijima in 1991 (Nature 1991, 354, 56:58), and an active area of research once CNT availability began to increase via the innovations of Smalley and others (Chem Phys Lett 1995, 243, 49:54). The work presented in this report was conducted at Rice University under contract W911NF-11-1-0249. Here, it is shown that the use of high weight percentage CNT medium density polyethylene (MDPE) composites has suitability towards the sensing of nerve agent stimulants such as dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The results indicate a possible binary composite approach to sensing, using two variants of CNT. As this work progresses, optimization of the CNT towards sensing DMMP through functionalization is suggested, as is improvement to the experimental apparatus to add functionality, such as controlled and active flow, at a fixed temperature relevant to the application.

    Air traffic controllers are responsible for directing air traffic based upon decisions made from traffic activity depicted on 2Dimensional (2D) radar displays. Controllers must identify aircraft and detect potential conflicts while simultaneously developing and executing plans of action to ensure safe separation is maintained. With a nearly 100% increase in traffic expected within the next decade (FAA, 2012a), controllers’ abilities to rapidly interpret spacing and maintain awareness for longer durations with increased workload will become increasingly imperative to safety.

    This report summarizes the results of Phase I (Design Concept) of an RDC effort to develop a readily deployable system for the in-situ detection, identification, and characterization of submerged oil in the water column. The first phase of the project involves development and testing of three technological approaches to the detection problem. A system developed by NORBIT US Ltd. addresses the detection of hydrocarbons using the backscatter from acoustic signals from a Wide Band Multi-Beam Sonar (WBMS). A system developed by WET Labs, named the Fluorescent IN-situ Detection System for OIL (FINDS OIL), uses flow-through fluorometric measurements and fluorescent backscatter to identify and characterize petroleum hydrocarbons encountered by the instrument. A third system, also by Wet Labs, named Wide-angle-scattering Inversion to Detect Oil in Water (WINDOW), uses the scattering and refraction of light to determine the mass and volume concentration, droplet size and density of the entrained oil. The systems are described in terms of the basic technology, ability to detect and characterize oil, areal coverage, ease of data processing and display, ruggedness and deployability, as well as the challenges involved in preparing the system for Prototype Development and Testing. This report will be used to make a decision on whether to move forward with prototype development for each system.

  • 32118.应用于两区域互联电力系统的基于优化控制器的粒子群智能

    This paper presents the optimal performance of Load Frequency control (LFC) in interconnected two-area power systems. Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers are commonly used for LFC systems in power industry. But the dynamic behaviors in the presence of variations in load changes with different operating conditions are needed to be improved. This paper proposes Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based Load Frequency Control for improving the dynamic performance of the system. A two area interconnected power system, having different generating units is considered to be equipped with Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) controller. PSO algorithm is implemented to search the optimal controller parameters by minimizing the time domain objective function. The performance of the proposed PID controller has been evaluated by the performance of the conventional controller and the controller tuned by Genetic algorithm (GA) in order to demonstrate the superior efficiency of the proposed PSO algorithm. Simulation results proved that the proposed algorithm is moderately fast algorithm and yields true optimal gains with minimum overshoot, minimum undershoot, minimum rise time and minimum settling time for any power system. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of the proposed controller under variations of system parameters and load changes are better than that of conventional and GA controllers.

    In this report, we report the investigation of energy harvesting with coupled resonators while using magnetostrictive material called Galfenol. Galfenol is an alloy iron with an approximate concentration of iron and gallium as 83 and 17, respectively. Here, we describe a coupled system of mesoscale (1- to 10-cm) cantilever beams. The coupled system can be used for harvesting vibration energy to power and aid the performance of low-power wireless sensor nodes. The report is organized as follows. First we introduce the model of the transducer with Galfenol as the magnetostrictive material. Here, we discuss the model parameters derived from the experiment and show the simulations of a single beam. This is followed by the design of the power converters that are best suited for this device. Next, we analyze an all-to-all coupled system. Finally, we draw conclusions and describe the future course of the research.
