A growing body of literature and inspirational examples provides guidance for aspiring social media community leaders. We know that design principles for websites can make a substantial difference in getting first-time users to return and to trust commercial, academic, government, and other websites. By contrast, building credible social media communities requires large numbers of regular content contributors guided by inspirational and committed leaders. This paper offers a defining framework for discussing the social, technical, and content foundations that encourage trusted contributors to contribute credible content to social media communities. Each component of the framework -- the trusted contributors, credible content, reliable resources, and responsible organizations -- can be undermined.

In this paper, we investigate the prediction of visual grasp affordances from 2D measurements. Appearancebased estimation of grasp affordances is desirable when 3-D scans are unreliable due to clutter or material properties.We develop a general framework for estimating grasp affordances from 2-D sources, including local texture-like measures as well as object-category measures that capture previously learned grasp strategies. Local approaches to estimating grasp positions have been shown to be effective in real-world scenarios, but are unable to impart objectlevel biases and can be prone to false positives. We describe how global cues can be used to compute continuous pose estimates and corresponding grasp point locations, using a max-margin optimization for category-level continuous pose regression.

The “Cyber" and ”Physical" worlds are merging. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are no longer isolated,but start to reach into the Cloud, thereby composing a network which realizes the concept that became known as The Internet of Things. The dynamic nature of the applications in this domain poses signi cant technical challenges concerning the assurance of important system properties like reliability, robustness, adaptability, and security. Modeling has proven itself to be a valuable tool in gaining better understanding of complex systems, but existing modeling platforms may lack the expressivity to model these new, much more dynamic, and opportunistically composed systems in which the data they handle typically does not conform to a rigid structure.This thesis addresses the problem of handling dynamic data, in the statically typed, actor-oriented modeling environment called Ptolemy II. It explores the possibilities of using type inference to statically type dynamic data and leverage dynamic type checking to invoke error handling strategies that enhance robustness.

This is a revised and extended version of Tech Report (EECS-2012-200) with the same title. The construction of various Klein bottles that belong to different regular homotopy classes, and which thus cannot be smoothly transformed into one another, is formally introduced.
