The growing requirements of steel products qualities bring even tricky restrictions to the rolling process.With the fast response,reliable control and low maintenance requirements,the hydraulic automatic gauge control system has been widely applied to screw down the roller to maintain the precise rolling spaces for product quality control.Regarding to non-stopped heavy duties charged to the system,unavoidable faults and disfunctioas not only influence the product quality,but also bring underlying safety issues.The hydraulic cylinder is the executing component of the roller screw down and it has the dominant percentage of hydraulic components' faults.Working with unexpect loading is one of major impact factor that causes several chain-effects happened to the cylinder,as the classical diagnostic process is lack of cross-validating and time-consuming,the paper proposes the potentials of using acoustic emission to fill the dilemmas.The works include the data acquisition process to record the ultrasound acoustic signals from the hydraulic cylinder during it was loaded with 6 types of conditions,a modified image based acoustic emission approach constructed by using 8 significant waveform features was applied to generate visual effects and transform the cylinder acoustic emission signals under various loadings to a uniform format,the subtle differences among various Ioadings can be observed based on the pixel and intensity changes of the images.By applying the principal component analysis to project the acoustic emission image profiles onto the 3D plane,a clear trajectory can be observed with normal and overload conditions allocated upon the positive and negative sides of the axis.The result provided not only the potential of using acoustic emission for dynamic state identification of the subtle changes,but also opens up the possibility of preventive measures to the cylinder at risks in the future.

Laser etched 300 series Stainless Steel Burst Disks (SSBD) ranging between 0.178 mm (0.007-in.) and 0.508mm (0.020-in.) thick were designed for use in a 17-caliber two-stage light gas launcher. First, a disk manufacturing method was selected using a combination of wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) to form the blank disks and laser etching to define the pedaling fracture pattern. Second, a replaceable insert was designed to go between the SSDB and the barrel. This insert reduced the stress concentration between the SSBD and the barrel, providing a place for the petals of the SSDB to open, and protecting the rifling on the inside of the barrel. Thereafter, a design of experiments was implemented to test and characterize the burst characteristics of SSBDs. Extensive hydrostatic burst testing of the SSBDs was performed to complete the design of experiments study with one-hundred and seven burst tests. The experiment simultaneously tested the effects of the following: two SSBD material states (full hard, annealed); five SSBD thicknesses 0.178, 0.254, 0.305, 0.381 mm (0.007, 0.010, 0.012, 0.015, 0.020-in.); two grain directions relative; number of times the laser etch pattern was repeated (varies between 5-200 times); two heat sink configurations (with and without heat sink); and, two barrel configurations (with and without insert). These tests resulted in the quantification of the relationship between SSBD thickness, laser etch parameters, and desired burst pressure. Of the factors investigated only thickness and number of laser etches were needed to develop a mathematical relationship predicting hydrostatic burst pressure of disks using the same barrel configuration. The fracture surfaces of two representative SSBD bursts were then investigated with a scanning electron microscope, one burst hydrostatically in a fixture and another dynamically in the launcher. The fracture analysis verified that both burst conditions resulted in a ductile overload failure indicated by transgranular microvoid coalescence, non-fragmenting rupture and mixed tensile and shear failure modes, regardless of the material states tested. More testing is underway to determine the relationship between SSBD burst pressure and projectile velocity.

Technical challenges exist with infrastructure that can be addressed by nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, such as detecting corrosion damage to reinforcing steel that anchor concrete bridge railings to bridge road decks. Moisture and chloride ions reach the anchors along the cold joint between the rails and deck, causing corrosion that weakens the anchors and ultimately the barriers.

The VA Office of Inspector General Office of Healthcare Inspections conducted an inspection of the Pueblo Community Living Center (CLC), in Pueblo, CO, which is operated by the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, located in Denver, CO. The purpose of the inspection was to determine the validity of allegations regarding CLC resident abuse and reporting irregularities. We did not substantiate the allegation of resident abuse. We did not substantiate the allegation that staff attempted to cover up an allegation of abuse or that staff who report potential abuse are retaliated against; however, we found staff did not report allegations of abuse as required by VHA and local policies, and did not track or trend incidents such as bruises and skin tears of unknown origin in order to identify potential abuse patterns. We recommended that the system Director ensures all Associate Chiefs of Nursing and CLC staff are retrained on the requirements for reporting allegations of abuse and that procedures to report, log, track, trend, and analyze injuries of unknown origin at the CLC are developed.

The current proposal aims to explore the relationship between brain function and connectivity in selective pathways/circuits, neuropsychological functioning, and cognitive rehabilitation response in Veterans with both Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Toward this end, we propose a randomized clinical trial involving a cognitive rehabilitation intervention that targets improved executive functioning, with the participation of N=100 Veterans diagnosed with both TBI and PTSD (n=50 experimental/n=50 control). We have just begun recruitment three months ago and enrolled n=15 dyads of veterans and family members at this point.

An efficient method for utilising a two-dimensional camera to recognise hand gestures in three-dimensional space is described. The work is presented within the context of a recuperation aid for younger children with impaired movement of the upper limbs. The application is designed for use on a standard Android tablet device in the home, as part of an interactive storybook, so the algorithms are necessarily efficient. The hand movement recognition is achieved through the attachment of brightly coloured models to the child's fingers which serve the dual purpose of providing easily trackable elements of the image, and encouraging the child to regard the application as a game rather than a chore. The application promotes repeated use of specific hand skills identified by the medical profession to stimulate and assess rehabilitation of patients with impaired upper limb dexterity.

Over the past year, the results of the DOE funded research were summarized in 3 review articles. 12 original manuscripts were written. The research results were reported in 28 invited talks at conferences and university seminars. 20 invitations were accepted for talks in the near future. 2 symposia at national and international meetings have being organized this year on topics closely related to the DOE funded project, and 2 more symposia have been planned for the near future. We summarized the insights into photoinduced dynamics of semiconductor QDs, obtained from our time-domain ab initio studies. QDs exhibit both molecular and bulk properties. Unlike either bulk or molecular materials, QD properties can be modified continuously by changing QD shape and size. However, the chemical and physical properties of molecular and bulk materials often contradict each other, which can lead to differing viewpoints about the behavior of QDs. For example, the molecular view suggests strong electron-hole and charge-phonon interactions, as well as slow energy relaxation due to mismatch between electronic energy gaps and phonon frequencies. In contrast, the bulk view advocates that the kinetic energy of quantum confinement is greater than electron-hole interactions, that chargephonon coupling is weak, and that the relaxation through quasi-continuous bands is rapid. By synthesizing the bulk and molecular viewpoints, we clarified the controversies and provided a unified atomistic picture of the nature and dynamics of photoexcited states in semiconductor QDs.
