Tourism is an important contributor to Indonesia's economy, with the sector providing employment to some 11mn people as of end-2021, equivalent to 8.3% of the country’s total workforce. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, hit the sector hard and, as a result, its contribution to Indonesia’s economy fell sharply. The total contribution of travel and tourism to Indonesia’s GDP fell from 5.9% in 2019 to 3.2% in 2020 and further to 2.4% in 2021, according to estimates by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Data from the UNWTO showed that international tourist arrivals in the first nine months of 2022 were still 80% below pre-pandemic levels. In FY2019, the Indian automotive industry registered new record high volumes in output and domestic sales. The country is the largest market for renewable energy investment globally, with an estimated USD 266bn spent on clean energy in 2021 alone. China is the leader in terms of hydro, solar and wind deployment and is the largest manufacturer of RE components. Chinese companies supply the domestic and global markets with high-quality wind turbines and solar modules at competitive prices. Cumulatively, China has installed more than 1.0 TW of clean power capacity by end-2021, equivalent to 43% of the country’s power capacity mix. The electricity in the grid that comes from renewable sources amounted to almost 28% of the total. RE adoption will continue in the coming years as China targets to double its solar and wind capacity to 1.2 TW by 2030.
