Indonesia’s low-cost carrier Mandala Airlines aims to carry two million passengers in 2013. It is seeking to capture a 20% share in Indonesia’s domestic market. The entry of low-cost carrier Malindo Airways into the Malaysia market has turned up the heat on AirAsia. Investors are eyeing stakes in Asia-Pacific airlines, to tap into the region’s fast-growing aviation market. Philippines AirAsia, agreed in March to acquire a 49% stake in Philippine rival Zest Airways and 100% of Asiawide Airways. Korean Air acquired a 44% stake in loss-making CSA Czech Airlines for €2.64 million (US$3.43 million), in a bid to increase its presence in Europe. Asia-Pacific airlines look set to continue to raise funds for financing fleet expansion and to par high debt levels. IATA projects a total worldwide industry profit of US$12.7 billion for 2013.
