As wireless sensing and control become increasingly applicable in elds ranging from real-time alarm systems and vehicle systems to aeronautical guidance and formation control, the need for establishing a theoretical foundation for what is known as networked systems R1 has grown likewise.Any effective effort to develop a theoretical foundation for this relatively new paradigm necessitates pooling together of tools from multiple seemingly disparate disciplines. Some salient aspects of this paradigm, and the challenging issues that arise in this context, which we have addressed in the research supported by this AFOSR grant, are as follows, where the generic term agents is used for entities that are responsible for decision making that leads to actions, be they sensors or controllers or even dynamical systems.

This project supported research activities for making quantum- enhanced communications and metrology practical. The strategy was to develop robust photonic quantum states and sensors serving as an archetype for loss- tolerant information acquisition beyond the standard quantum limit, as well as in finding practical sensing applications outside the laboratory for detecting objects in situations where power-limited illumination is critical.We have also been efficient in investigating fundamental issues of quantum metrology, establishing a general framework for understanding more complex scenarios, such as lossy parameter estimation, and joint measurements of multiple parameters. Investigations have fostered a novel approach which will inform our future researchers: the adoption of sensing networks in which quantum memories act as key devices.

This report summarizes the results of a two-year research effort on sensornets for vehicle traffic classification. At the study outside, our main goals were to understanding the communications requirements for traffic monitoring systems (both short-range wireless inside a traffic sensornet, and wide-area to a central Traffic Management System), developing self-configuring traffic monitoring systems, and integrating prior work with these new results. The key outcomes of our research are to understand communications in a classification system, to carefully evaluate the effects of signature matching, and to further develop self-configuration. Finally, we tested our new approaches through a second major data collection exercise at USC.

The experiments revealed identical results to those obtained via microgravity processing.This research then led to a patented process for eliminating crystals in optical fiber preforms and the resulting optical fibers. In this paper, the microgravity results will be reviewed as well as patents and papers relating to the use of magnetic fields in various material and glass processing applications. Finally our patent to eliminate crystals in non-oxide glasses utilizing a magnetic field will be detailed.
