A distributed control system (DCS) is an automated control system that is distributed across the entire organization. A DCS is distributed throughout various systems with each component or sub-system being controlled by one or more controllers, whereby the DCS can provide instructions to different parts of the machine or plant. Thus, instead of having a centrally located control system, each section of the plant has its own control operation. DCS solutions thus enable the effective and efficient control and management of the overall plant. Furthermore, they also help to reduce downtime errors and to increase the productivity of a plant. Therefore these DCS solutions are being adopted by several industries such as Oil and Gas, Power, Pharmaceutical, Pulp and Paper, Aerospace, Automotive, Shipbuilding, Machinery Manufacturing, Consumer Durables, and Food and Beverages. The DCS market in China is one of the more steadily growing engineering markets. The market is expected to witness an improvement in its growth rate and post a CAGR of 9.56 percent during the period 2011–2015.

A manufacturing execution system (MES) is a manufacturing software program that helps manage manufacturing control operations. A MES helps improve the end-users' operational performance by automating, executing, and managing processes as well as performance across the value chain. In essence, an MES acts as a communication system between the various parts of a plant and also provides an enterprise-wide record system. It provides the right information, at the right time, to the right people to take corrective and preventive actions about all aspects of manufacturing activities such as inventory, work-in-progress, production capacity analysis and standard lead times.The MES market in China is one of the fastest growing markets in the Global MES market. The majority of the growth is derived from the Pharmaceutical, Automotive, Electronics and Semiconductor, and Food and Beverages industries in China.
