This research project sought to develop a prototype hydrogen-based fuel cell system for ITS devices. The project investigated hydrogen storage capacities of the various candidate chemical hydride analogs; selected the most efficient of the candidates for energy storage based on volume, mass, and cost; developed a prototype system; and estimated the capital and operating cost for such a system. A hydrogen fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, providing a clean, high-efficiency energy source that circumvents the problems associated with conventional batteries. A major drawback that limits its utility, however, is the use of heavy and bulky compressed metal cylinders as the source of hydrogen. The chemical-based hydrogen generation used in this project can provide a compact, atmospheric-pressure storage option for the controlled release of hydrogen. Many ITS-based applications can be envisaged with hydrogen-based fuel cells, such as alternating-traffic signs, directional signals, speed-limit signs, blinkers in series, warning blinkers, and backup power sources at traffic signals during power outages. This system is particularly attractive because many remote traffic signals on northern Minnesota roads lack access to a power grid, requiring the use of batteries that must be changed often, thus incurring maintenance costs.

Reference Network Models (RNMs) are large-scale distribution network planning tools. RNMs can be used by policy makers and regulators to estimate efficient distribution costs. This is a very challenging task, particularly being network planning a combinatorial problem, which is especially difficult to solve due to the vast size of the distribution areas, and the use of several voltage levels. This chapter presents the main features of RNMs developed by the authors, including high performance requirements related to the type and size of the problem. The model can be used to plan distribution networks either from scratch or incrementally from existing grids. Different case studies illustrate the applicability of these models to the assessment of the impact of massive deployment of renewable distributed generation, demand response actions, and plug-in electric vehicle penetration on distribution costs. The results obtained provide valuable information to guide strategic policy-making decisions regarding the implementation of renewable energy programs and smart grid initiatives.

We propose a new segment-based registration system for aerial images of the same scene taken at different times, from different view points, and/or by different sensors. We introduce a quantitative characterization of the registration difficulty for a given pair of images. Targeting high registration difficulty input, we exploit on inear edges in images. In the first step of our registration process, we detect line segments in each image. Next we conduct a merging step on the detected line segments. Finally, using the merged line segments as input, we generate possible hypothesis transformations by choosing three segments in each image. Our collinearity score metric for the transformations balances considerations of angular and perpendicular distances. After scoring each hypothesis transformation, the highest-scoring one is selected. For high registration difficulty image pairs, our algorithm shows significant improvement compared to publicly accessible image registration codes.

Digital hardware frontend specification is defined by two extremes - RTL specification and HLS specification. RTL specification produces highly optimized designs, but requires extremely verbose low level specification on the part of the designer. On the other hand, HLS specification requires much less verbose high level specification from the designer, but does not produce well optimized designs. In this thesis, I present a middle ground that captures the pros of these two extremes - a system in which the designer specifies a basic datapath and uses a tool to automatically apply optimizations to that basic datapath.

Node localization is one of the key technologies in wireless sensor network.This paper proposed an improved RBDMCL algorithm based on traditional MCL algorithm,which can reduce the sampling areas and improve the positioning accuracy by building a node motion model.Then concludes by simulation analysis and comparison that RBDMCL has higher positioning accuracy than MCL in the anchor node density and node velocity.

The application of distributed multi-sensor information fusion technology in accurate positioning of Underwater Vehicle was introduced in this paper.According to the system structure of Distributed multi-sensor in an AUV "T1",this article establishes the Kalman filtering mathematical model,accomplishes the fusion algorithm based on Kalman filtering and a numerical simulation.The experimental result shows that the application of fusion algorithm based on Kalman filtering can avoid the limitations of a single sensor,reduce its uncertainty impact and increase the confidence level of data.
