The purpose of Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) environmental surveillance is to characterize radiological and nonradiological conditions of the off-site environs and estimate public doses related to these conditions, confirm estimations of public dose based on effluent monitoring data, and, where appropriate, provide supplemental data to support compliance monitoring for applicable environmental regulations. This environmental monitoring plan (EMP) is intended to document the rationale, frequency, parameters, and analytical methods for the ORR environmental surveillance program and provides information on ORR site characteristics, environmental pathways, dose assessment methods, and quality management. ORR-wide environmental monitoring activities include a variety of media including air, surface water, vegetation, biota, and wildlife. In addition to these activities, site-specific effluent, groundwater, and best management monitoring programs are conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12), and the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP).

MicroRNAs are a category of non-coding RNAs, which are single-stranded and short molecules, comprising approximately 22 nucleotides. They play an important role in the regulation of gene expression by interacting with mRNA molecules and suppressing protein synthesis, thereby resulting in a phenomenon called gene silencing. Each microRNA strand regulates the expression of several genes, thereby coordinating cellular pathways. The unregulated growth of microRNAs leads to disruption of cellular pathways, thereby resulting in diseases such as cancer. DNA sequencing is defined as the process of determining the nucleotide order of any specific DNA portion.DNA sequencing translates the essential information for any living organism to survive and evolve. To overcome these barriers, next-generation sequencing technology, an important breakthrough in the field of genomics, has been launched.Next-generation sequencing technology can sequence millions of small fragments of DNA concurrently. In this technology a software program is then used to link the millions to billions of reads to reconstruct the complete genome sequence. Accuracy for this technology has increased to levels up to 99.99 percent. These technologies have higher throughput, sensitivity, and specificity than microarrays. Next-generation sequencing finds its application in whole genome, exome, and transcriptome sequencing that provide a high-resolution and global view of the cancer genome. Next-generation sequencing coupled with bioinformatics tools has revolutionized cancer research, diagnosis, and therapy. This technology helps to track and trace the spread of disease and foreign contaminants in drugs.
