A transfer switch shifts loads or electrical distribution systems between two power sources, making it an essential part of a standby or emergency power system. There are two main types of transfer switches: an automatic transfer switch and static transfer switch. An automatic transfer switch is used to transfer power between a primary (utility source) and secondary power source (a generator or other backup power source). A static transfer switch shifts loads between two power sources with the help of power semiconductors (such as an SCR). The transfer in these switches is rapid as the switching does not involve the motion of any mechanical parts. Both switches have their merits. When the quality-price ratio is considered, automatic transfer switches have a considerable advantage. However, static transfer switches are used when high quality is of much greater concern than price.

Pregnancy detection kits are diagnostic products that check for chemical markers related to pregnancy. These kits take up the midstream format, which is one of the three categories under rapid pregnancy tests. The remaining two are the strip format and the card or cassette format. Pregnancy detection kits use the rapid chromatographic immunoassay technique for the detection of hCG in urine to indicate pregnancy. Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method used to measure the arterial blood oxygen saturation level of a patient. Pulse oximetry works on the principle of spectrophotometry, and makes use of the pulsating nature of the arterial blood flow and light absorptive characteristics of Hb. Using a pulse oximeter, hypoxia (a condition in which the supply of oxygen to the body or a region of the body is inadequate) can be detected before patients become clinically cyanosed. Pulse oximeters are used by patients with respiratory or cardiac problems, especially COPD, and for the diagnosis of sleep apnea and hypopnea. The equipment consists of a probe containing two diodes emitting light of two different wavelengths, infrared and red. The light is transmitted through parts of the body such as a finger or earlobe. The oxygenated Hb absorbs more of the infrared light and the deoxygenated Hb absorbs more of the red light. By calculating the amount of absorption, the sensor in the pulse oximeter computes the proportion of oxygenated Hb in the blood and displays it digitally on the screen.
