The goal of the Sustainable Painting Operations for the Total Army (SPOTA) program is to significantly reduce the amount of hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions produced in coating operations, including adhesives application and removal. Adhesives and sealants account for approximately 5% of U.S. Army-wide HAP emissions from surface coating operations. Materials conforming to Federal specification MMM-A-1617 have been recognized as one of the largest contributors. Laboratory test results previously conducted identified 3M-847 as a suitable HAP-free replacement adhesive that conforms to MMM-A-1617. This report focuses on the field trial conducted at Anniston Army Depot, AL, on a M109A6 Paladin heavy brigade combat vehicle. In particular, the hydraulic compartment door seal was bonded with HAP-free 3M-847 adhesive in place of the baseline (Clifton FA-1051) with successful results. The technicians found that processing the alternative adhesive was similar to that of the baseline, and after six months, the adhesive did not have any signs of blistering, delamination (either cohesively or adhesively), substrate failure, or deterioration of any kind. Overall, the HAP-free 3M-847 adhesive was qualified for use on MMM-A-1617 Army platforms.

This issue also studies environmentally conscious highway design for vertical grades; a fuel consumption prediction model for buses; discretionary passenger vehicle idling behaviors by season and trip stage; and, a statistical study of variables associated with particulate matter exposure levels at bus shelters.

In this paper the main idea is to control the flight of an F-16 airplane using fuzzy system and PID controller to achieve the control. In general, to control the total flight is necessary to control the angle of the elevator, angle of the aileron and the angle of the rudder. For this reason, 3 fuzzy systems are used to control the respective angles. In this paper the fuzzy systems are presented with results using the simulation plant of the airplane.

Results from 548,507 indoor radon tests from a database compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Radiation Protection, Radon Division, are evaluated in this report in an effort to determine areas where concentrations of radon are highest. Indoor radon concentrations were aggregated according to geologic unit and hydrogeologic setting for spatial analysis. Indoor radon concentrations greater than or equal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) action level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) were observed for 39 percent of the test results; the highest concentration was 1,866.4 pCi/L.

Electromechanica Inc. was tasked with researching and developing a proof of concept robot tool for in-situ pipe inspection of fleet piping. Electromechanica has designed and fabricated a proof of concept robot tool based on a pneumatically actuated peristaltic motion. This motion is accomplished by the use of inflatable pneumatic grippers, as well as a novel flexible pneumatic cylinder capable of actuation in a variety of articulated positions. Various representative piping systems were used to successfully test locomotion and guidance of the system.

One-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis is frequently used to provide quick estimates of the performance of thermal protection system concepts for reentry systems. While finite difference techniques are commonly employed when solving simple single-material thermal problems, more complex cases with multiple layers can complicate the numerical implementation. A control volume analysis is used in the present work to derive a finite volume approach to the 1-D thermal analysis problem using generalized coordinates. Details of the numerical implementation are also discussed to highlight how this technique can simplify the overall solution process. Finally, two example problems are used to validate the accuracy of the approach, one of which involves analysis of a multilayer TPS problem with non-uniform grid spacing.

The purpose of our research proposal is to determine how the deletion of Tsc1 and mTOR dysregulation affects thalamus development and function. An addition goal of our research was to use our conditional gene deletion system to test the ability of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin to ameliorate neurological phenotypes depending upon the time and duration of treatment. During this research period, we further advanced our novel genetic approach to control Tsc1 gene deletion concomitant with cell lineage tracing and biochemical analysis to better understand the developmental aspects of Tuberous Sclerosis. A major set of findings is that we identified cellular, molecular, circuitry, and behavioral changes that occur during development and are specific to distinct temporal roles of Tsc1 and the mTOR pathway. Specifically, we showed that early embryonic deletion of Tsc1 resulted in mTOR dysregulation within 48 hours and this dysregulation persisted throughout the life of the mice; this is the first report of the kinetics of mTOR dysregulation. In addition, we showed that neural circuits that connect the thalamus and cerebral cortex are disrupted by early or late deletion of Tsc1 and that the neural circuit abnormality is first observed at the end of embryogenesis (five days after mTOR dysregultion). Thus, specific phenotypes emerge rapidly and others appear over a more prolonged developmental window. We then used biochemistry to show that proteins involved in synaptic architecture are altered by the early deletion of Tsc1. Finally, we show that behavioral alterations are strongly associated with the time of Tsc1 function. We initiated studies to address our additional and have begun delineate the most effective method and dose of rapamycin that can support development while at the same time effectively suppressing the mTOR pathway.

Production of IL-17 from joint TH-17 cells can strongly contribute to RA angiogenesis (4) through a mechanism that is in part due to induction of VEGF from RA ST fibroblasts (5, 6). We document that CCL21 is expressed from endothelial cells activated by IL-17 (23) and neutralization of CCL21 markedly reduces IL-17 mediated VEGF transcription from the RA ST. Like IL-17, CCL21 is also capable of enhancing production of VEGF from RA ST fibroblasts and can further synergize with VEGF in facilitating endothelial chemotaxis. Hence CCL21 may be the unidentified connecting factor between the IL-17 and VEGF cascades. Therapeutic targeting of VEGF and VEGFR has led to disappointing results regarding drug toxicity and lack of efficacy in patients with advanced tumor growth (24, 25) therefore RA patients were not treated with anti-VEGF or anti- VEGFR therapies. However, since we demonstrate that CCL21 induced by IL-17 can modulate VEGF expression in RA ST, targeting CCL21 may disconnect the link between IL-17 and VEGF cascade and therefore more efficiently suppress RA neovascularization.
