We consider the problem of estimating the locations of a set of points in a k-dimensional euclidean space given a subset of the pairwise distance measurements between the points. We define a notion of non-contractibility and show that the relaxation gives the exact point locations when the underlying graph is non-contractible. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated on an experimental data set obtained from a network of 44 nodes in an indoor environment and is shown to be robust to non-line-of-sight errors.

Large-scale parallel machines are programmed primarily with the single program, multiple data (SPMD) model of parallelism. This model has advantages of scalability and simplicity, combining independent threads of execution with global collective communication and synchronization operations.We discuss the information required by those analyses and provide a rough sketch of a team analysis for computing that information. We hope that this sketch can be used as a basis for future implementation of a complete team analysis.

We design RSPMD extensions for the Titanium language, including a hierarchical team data structure and lexically-scoped constructs for operating over teams. We demonstrate that these extensions prevent erroneous use of teams that would result in deadlock. In addition, we present a runtime mechanism for ensuring proper use of both global collective operations and collectives over teams, eliminating more potential sources of deadlock.

Although large wall-sized displays are becoming increasingly available, their rate of adoption in research and business environments has been limited due to the high cost of developing applications that scale to cluster-driven displays and lack of interaction techniques for multi-user input on such shared displays. In this report, we introduce Hydrascope, a framework for creating multi-viewmeta-applicationsfor cluster-driven displays by adapting existing web applications without modifying their source code. Hydrascope meta-applications work by running multiple instances of an application in parallel and synchronizing their views. We demonstrate the capabilities of our framework with five example applications.

We have developed an android application for photo editing on top of a low cost crowdsourcing system. We use the crowdsourcing platform to add interesting effects to images taken by users which they can later share with their friends. CrowdBrush application thus provides a feature of custom photo editing, which is missing from the current photo manipulation applications in the market. Additionally, the system produces “human-verified” results as it relies on human (crowd) involvement in the process and guarantees an end product which is aesthetically pleasing.

This paper describes the need for adaptive gait tuning on an eight-legged robot, which will enable it to adjust its gait parameters to increase the speed at which it navigates difficult and varying terrains. Specifically, we characterize the robot’s performance on varied terrains and use the results to inform the implementation of a finite-difference policy gradient reinforcement learning algorithm.
