A cardiac pacemaker is a medical device used to supplement the normal electrical activity of the heart in people with cardiac disorders such as sick sinus syndrome, arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, and atrioventricular blockages. The sinoatrial node, a group of cells in the heart tissue, is the natural pacemaker of the heart. In cases where abnormal electrical pulses are produced by the sinoatrial node, artificial cardiac pacemakers are used to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. Cardiac pacemakers also monitor and record the heart's electrical activity and rhythm. They monitor blood temperature and breathing rate and adjust the heart rate to changes in a person's activities. They can be temporary or permanent, implantable or external, depending on the requirements of the individual.

There is a high strength of evidence that ICD therapy for primary prevention of SCD, versus no ICD therapy, shows benefit with regard to all cause mortality and SCD in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy beyond the immediate post-MI or coronary revascularization periods. Studies failed to show statistically significant differences for all-cause mortality across subgroups. There is insufficient evidence for all-cause mortality for patients who receive CRT-Ds versus ICD alone for primary prevention. There is high strength of evidence that in-hospital adverse events are infrequent (1-3%) and moderate strength of evidence that up to one-fifth of patients receive inappropriate shocks from the ICDs.

This research aims at designing a non-invasive, low-cost, and portable imaging device for cancer screening. Conceptualization, architectural and system-level design, and finally implementation of the system called TUSI, Time-Domain Ultra-Wideband Synthetic Imager, are addressed. Using an array of closely controlled radiating silicon chips, acting as transceivers in microwave /mm-wave frequencies, this device transmits short “beam-steered” pulses and picks up reflections from tissue abnormalities (e.g. cancerous tissue). By processing the data from multiple transceivers, a larger aperture is synthesized. In essence, this imager probes the “electrical” properties of the tissue.
