Butadiene, chemically known as 1, 3-butadiene, is a colorless, non-corrosive gas, which has a slight aromatic odor. It is manufactured commercially by extractive distillation from crude butylene concentration (C4) cut, a by-product of ethylene and propylene production. The value chain is initiated by raw material suppliers, who supply the required petrochemicals and oleochemicals, to make the intermediate products. The raw materials are then processed into ethylene and its by-products, which are further converted and separated to butadiene. The final product is then made available for other major applications, such as Polybutadiene (PBR), Chloroprene, Styrene-Butadiene (SBR), Nitrile Rubber (Acrylonitrile Butadiene (NBR), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Adiponitrile, Sulfolane, Ethylidene Norbornene, and other applications. There are no direct consumer uses of butadiene. Butadiene is used mainly as an intermediate and a monomer in the manufacture of polymers, such as synthetic rubbers or elastomers, including styrene-butadiene rubber, polybutadiene rubber, polychloroprene (Neoprene), and nitrile rubber. However, the major use of butadiene is in the manufacture of tires.
