Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that can affect both males and females. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacterium grows in warm and moist areas of uterus, reproductive tract, fallopian tubes, and urethra. It can also grow and infect the throat, mouth, and anus. Women are more likely to contract this disease than men. Based on the Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2009 report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that gonorrhea is the second most common communicable disease in the US.
