Growing road traffic congestion and rise in fuel prices are driving freight companies to undertake freight transport using diesel locomotive engines.Freight transport by rail contributes far less emissions compared with road transport. Growing preference for fuel-efficient and on-time transport of freight are driving the market for diesel locomotive engines in terms of freight transportation. Freight transportation through railways is estimated to give up to five times more fuel efficiency than freight transportation through road as railway locomotives have the capacity to transport more cargo without being affected by traffic gridlock.Most of the growth for diesel locomotive engines come from emerging countries like India and South Africa where the rail authorities do not have funds for complete rail electrification. Developed countries like the US also contribute to a large share of global diesel locomotive engine market.The Indian Railway authority is planning to develop a hybrid dual-mode engine train to run on diesel through places that are not economical to be electrified. The hybrid dual-mode engine will be able to make use of overhead electric cables for running independently using electric power through places having electrified rails.The dual-mode train would further alleviate the need for fully replacing a diesel train by adding additional equipment so as to change to an electric engine locomotive for reducing dependence on petroleum fuels.Increasing concerns over harmful emissions and decline in the use of diesel locomotive engines in the passenger transport segment are negatively affecting the growth of the market. Most of the passenger rail transport consist of electric locomotive engines. Countries are upgrading toward electric locomotives as they offer faster and emission free freight transport than their diesel counterparts.
