Ancestry-based direct-to-consumer genetic tests are commonly used for genealogical and relationship DNA testing. These tests are typically advertised as being able to enable information regarding genetic ethnicity or to identify existing relatives who have also used the product. Companies compare consumer's test results to different databases of previous tests to assess the ethnicity of the individual, which results in different ethnicity estimates from one provider to another. Several companies also offer online forums which allow people who have been tested to share and discuss their results with others, which enables them to discover previously unknown relationships.
