Night vision devices collect ambient light, which includes moonlight, starlight or infrared (IR) light through the front lens of the device. This light is made of photons. It is converted to electrons by passing it through a photocathode tube. The electrons are then amplified through a chemical and electrical process. After that, the resulting light is thrown against a phosphorous screen that converts the electrons back to the visible light, which the user sees through the eyepiece. The image is a clear, green-hued, amplified recreation of the scene. It is green because of the phosphorous screen, which converts light to green. This is because human eyes are more sensitive to green light than to any other color.
