Ethernet technology has been widely used in LAN and MAN networks since 1990.Despite its popularity and growing acceptance in computers and peripherals industry, it was not adopted in the automotive industry. In fact, Ethernet was implemented for the first time in BMW X5 in 2013. This is because of the risks associated with adopting a new networking technology in the form of material costs as well as supply chain management. A new technology is only adopted in the industry if the benefits and advantages outweigh the risks involved. The controller area network (CAN), which was launched in 1990s in the automotive sector, is still the widely-accepted technology.

However, increased demand for bandwidth-longing applications has paved the road for Ethernet in the automotive industry.
