An EDR is a device installed in a vehicle for recording the operation of vehicle systems for a few seconds (close to 20 seconds) during the time of occurrence of an accident.The recordings are predominantly used for assessing the functioning and effectiveness of vehicle systems during and after accidents. It is imperative to note that neither can the data in EDRs be deleted nor can the EDR (also referred to as car's black box) be disabled.As EDRs are not indispensable parts of vehicles and are only useful after an accident or crash, not all light vehicles are equipped with EDRs. Thus, regulatory mandates play a critical role in increasing the penetration of EDRs in vehicles.
