The supplier s procurement efforts for the final deliverable of the hermetically- sealed scroll compressors were underway.

Large amounts of methane in well water is a wide spread problem in North America. Methane gas from decaying biomass and oil and gas deposits escape into water wells typically through cracks or faults in otherwise non-porous rock strata producing saturated water systems. This methane saturated water can pose several problems in the delivery of drinking water. The problems range from pumps vapor locking (cavitating), to pump houses exploding. The City of Marsing requested Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to assist with some water analyses as well as to provide some engineering approaches to methane capture through the INL Technical Assistance Program (TAP). There are several engineering approaches to the removal of methane and natural gas from water sources that include gas stripping followed by compression and/or dehydration; membrane gas separators coupled with dehydration processes, membrane water contactors with dehydration processes.

The human voice encodes a wealth of information about emotion, mood and mental states. With the advent of pervasively available speech collection methods (e.g. mobile phones) and the low-computation costs of speech analysis, it suggests that non-invasive, relatively reliable, and modestly inexpensive platforms are available for mass and long-term deployment of a mental health monitor. In the thesis, I describe my investigation pathway on speech analysis to measure a variety of mental states, including a ect and those triggered by psychological stress and sleep deprivation.

Polyoxyphenylene triazole sulfonic acid has been proposed as a basis for development of improved proton-conducting polymeric materials for solid-electrolyte membranes in hydrogen/air fuel cells. Heretofore, the proton-conducting membrane materials of choice have been exemplified by a family of perfluorosulfonic acid-based polymers (Nafion7 or equivalent). These materials are suitable for operation in the temperature of 75 to 85 C, but in order to reduce the sizes and/or increase the energy-conversion efficiencies of fuel-cell systems, it would be desirable to increase temperatures to as high as 120 C for transportation applications, and to as high as 180 C for stationary applications. However, at 120 C and at relative humidity values below 50 percent, the loss of water from perfluorosulfonic acid-based polymer membranes results in fuel-cell power densities too low to be of practical value. Therefore, membrane electrolyte materials that have usefully high proton conductivity in the temperature range of 180 C at low relative humidity and that do not rely on water for proton conduction at 180 C would be desirable. The proposed polyoxyphenylene triazole sulfonic acid-based materials have been conjectured to have these desirable properties. These materials would be free of volatile or mobile acid constituents. The generic molecular structure of these materials is intended to exploit the fact, demonstrated in previous research, that materials that contain ionizable acid and base groups covalently attached to thermally stable polymer backbones exhibit proton conduction even in the anhydrous state.

This report describes operations at SunLine Transit Agency for their newest prototype fuel cell bus and five compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. In May 2010, SunLine began operating its sixth-generation hydrogen fueled bus, an Advanced Technology (AT) fuel cell bus that incorporates the latest design improvements to reduce weight and increase reliability and performance. The agency is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate the bus in revenue service. NREL has previously published two reports documenting the operation of the fuel cell bus in service. This report provides a summary of the results with a focus on the bus operation from July 2011 through January 2012.

A suspension comprised of angled fibers is proposed as a new means for achieving high strain,high stress, energy dense electrostatic actuators. Angled fiber arrays have low density and canbe placed between the electrodes of a parallel plate or comb-drive type actuator to create a selfcontained actuator sheet with low mass and volume. Angled fibers also have a Poisson’s ratio ofzero, allowing the use of robust, rigid electrodes, and they can be composed of stiff materials withlow viscoelastic properties. This is in contrast to the alternative technology of dielectric elastomers that depend on unreliable compliant electrodes and highly viscoelastic dielectrics. Performancelimits of an ideal nanometer-scale actuator, such as energy density, stress and strain, and efficiencyare considered through theoretical modeling. A micrometer scale prototype is fabricated using a novel fiber peeling technique that easily produces high-aspect-ratio (1.8 μm radius, 66 μm long),angled microfibers. The microfibers are used as a suspension for a parallel plate actuator. Theprototype actuator is characterized through static and dynamic tests, to reveal a maximum static strain of 3.4%at a static stress of 0.8 kPa (electric field of 13.9 V/μm), a fast unloaded step responseof < 2 ms, a Q of 12.9 and a power density of 12.8 W/kg when driving an inertial load in resonanceat 845 Hz.

The main objective of this project was to identify the causes of longitudinal cracking in newly placed concrete deck segments adjacent to bridge deck expansion dam rehabilitations within District 3-0 of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). This objective was accomplished through three tasks. (1) A literature review of the potential causes of early-age cracking in restrained concrete elements, including bridge deck dams and concrete repair sections, was conducted. This task also included a survey of bridge engineers in other PennDOT districts and several other state DOTs and municipalities with regard to concrete bridge deck rehabilitation operations and occurrence of concrete early-age cracking. (2) A review of current PennDOT specifications related to bridge deck construction and rehabilitation was undertaken. This task compared current PennDOT requirements regarding concrete materials, structural/ reinforcement design, and construction operations with the recommendations from the literature review and survey of other transportation agencies and, when needed, suggested modifications to the current PennDOT specifications. In addition, three past and two active bridge deck rehabilitation projects within PennDOT Districts 2-0 and 3-0 were reviewed and inspected to evaluate their compliance with existing PennDOT specifications and literature recommendations to eliminate early-age cracking. (3) A comprehensive experimental evaluation of the material properties of three concrete mixtures commonly used for PennDOT bridge deck projects was performed to evaluate the early- and long-term performance and the risk of cracking of these mixtures. The three mixtures included AAA, HPC, and AAA-P. The following main conclusions were drawn from Tasks 1, 2, and 3 of the project. (a) The most likely causes of early cracking observed in deck rehabilitation projects are inadequate moist curing and failure to properly eliminate plastic shrinkage cracking during construction. In several occasions, it was found that the existing PennDOT specifications for proper water curing of concrete and monitoring of ambient conditions to minimize the evaporation rate from the surface of fresh concrete were not correctly followed. (b) The review of the three past deck rehabilitation projects show that the design of shrinkage and temperature steel reinforcement had been adequate and should not result in early-age cracking. (c) The existing PennDOT concrete mixtures AAA, HPC, and AAA-P can yield adequate performance in the field, provided that they are placed, consolidated, and cured properly. (d) A number of suggested modifications to the current PennDOT specifications are included in this report to minimize the risk of early-age cracking in concrete bridge deck construction and rehabilitation projects.

The overall aim is to conduct preliminary evaluations of new rehabilitation strategies and new functional assessment methods for homonymous hemianopia (HH) and spatial neglect (SN), disabling visual and cognitive perception conditions that commonly occur as a result of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. Both HH and SN prevent detection of objects on the affected side, resulting in unsafe walking and driving. Using realistic tasks in virtual environments representative of everyday mobility challenges we are evaluating a novel optical device expansion prism (EP) glasses - combined with a new computerized perceptual-motor training regimen in helping people with HH and SN detect and avoid obstacles on the affected side. In the first year we have made good progress in developing the training software and preparing the functional assessments, and have started recruitment. Specifically, we (1) obtained all necessary IRB approvals; (2) made excellent progress in developing and testing the training program and training task suite; (3) made excellent progress in preparing the functional assessments in the driving simulator and virtual mall that will be used to evaluate performance without and without the prism glasses before and after training; (4) evaluated mobile eye tracking technologies that will be used for an outdoor walking task; (5) began recruitment; (6) collected pre-pilot data from participants who did not meet the study criteria, and (7) enrolled 3 participants for the main pilot study. Results from the first participant who has completed the protocol are promising showing significantly improved detection rates and collision judgments with the EP-glasses after training.

We address various issues in learning and representation of visual object categories. A key componentof many state of the art object detection and image recognition systems, is the image classifier.e first show that a large number of classifiers used in computer vision that are based on comparisonof histograms of low level features, are “additive”, and propose algorithms that enable training and evaluation of additive classifiers that offer better tradeoffs between accuracy, runtime memoryand time complexity than previous algorithms. Our analysis speeds up the training and evaluation of several state of the art object detection, and image classification methods by several orders ofmagnitude.

The primary objectives of this project are to demonstrate: (1) energy efficiency gains achievable in small- to medium-sized buildings with MPC- based whole-building optimal control and (2) reduction in first costs achievable with a wireless sensor network (WSN)-based building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control system compared to a conventional wired system. The second objective is key because first cost is a barrier to wider application of advanced HVAC control and 70of the first cost is attributed to installation (wiring) and commissioning.
