Unconventional gas is a natural resource found trapped in coal beds, shale blocks, and tight sands. These gas resources are different from conventional energy in terms of reservoirs, geographical areas, and accumulations of natural gas. Different techniques are applied to extract unconventional gas depending on the field and type of gas to be extracted. A common method is hydraulic fracturing, where a hole is drilled into the rock and large amounts of water are injected at high pressure along with sand and other chemicals to create cracks in the rock. The cracks, when opened, will free the trapped gas allowing it to flow to the wellhead. The three types of unconventional gases are listed in the exhibit below.

An artificial lift pump is installed in oil wells to increase pressure within the reservoir and force oil to move to the surface. Such pumps are used when the natural force inside the well is not enough to push oil to the surface. More than 70 percent of oil wells have lost natural pressure and have reached a mature phase.

Cooling solutions are used in data centers to remove heat generated by IT equipment. Many CRAC and CRAH units are operated in data centers, including air conditioners, chillers, cooling towers, economizers, humidifiers, and modern containment systems that offer rack cooling. These cooling units use air and liquid cooling techniques to operate. The cooling process accounts for 40 percent of the electricity consumed in a data center. To reduce the OPEX of a data center, several modern cooling techniques are being invented and tested by vendors. Many data centers in the US are expected to be renovated, alongside the construction of new facilities, thus increasing demand for effective cooling solutions for data centers in the near future. Modern data center infrastructures are developed as green solutions to monitor energy onsumption and minimize the effect on the environment.

LSDs are a group of progressive, autosomal recessive, and hereditary disorders characterized by the accumulation of specific substrates and variable age of onset and clinical symptoms. Pompe disease, a type of LSD, is caused by mutations in the GAA gene. These mutations inhibit the mechanism of action of GAA, an enzyme responsible for catabolizing glycogen, resulting in accumulation of glycogen to toxic levels in the lysosomes of the cells. The buildup of glycogen in certain organs and tissues, especially in the muscles, hinders the normal functions of the organs. Pompe disease can be further classified as infantile-onset and adult-onset Pompe disease. As the disease is an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder, both parents are carriers and pass one copy of the mutated gene to their offspring. The disease affects both men and women across all ethnicities and races and has a varied age of onset of symptoms. To date, researchers have identified more than 300 genetic mutation types that lead to disease manifestation. Though there is no known cure for the disease, diet therapy and enzyme replacement therapy have been effective in reducing its clinical manifestations.

A fuel cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy through an electromechanical reaction. A typical fuel cell consists of two electrodes, the anode and the cathode, which react to generate electricity. While liquid electrolytes carry electrically charged elements from one electrode to another, a catalyst is required to speed up the chemical reaction inside the fuel cell. Methanol, biogas, hydrogen, natural gas, and hydrocarbons are various fuels that can be used in fuel cells. Fuel cells generate less pollution as hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water, a harmless by-product. Reduced pollution is one of the major factors driving the growth of the Fuel Cell market in North America.
