摘 要：Testosterone is the most important male sex hormone (androgen) produced by the male testis. It is also secreted in small amounts in the ovaries in women and in the adrenal glands. Testosterone in males is required for sperm production, the development of the male reproductive organs, and the development of secondary male sexual characteristics such as facial hair and deepening of the voice. It also helps in the growth and development of bones and muscles and affects the sex drive in both males and females. A deficiency of the hormone occurs when the body is unable to produce sufficient testosterone, and this deficiency leads to a disease called hypogonadism which can affect the quality of life considerably. Testosterone replacement therapy involves the process of administering testosterone externally in the event the body does not produce sufficient amounts of the hormone.
