Collapsible steering column consists of two hollow shafts with the smaller shaft placed inside the other. The two shafts are fitted into each other with the help of bearings and sealing. This design structure allows the steering column to collapse during a frontal impact and absorbs the energy of impact.The collapsible steering column is a part of vehicle’s passive safety system and is developed to reduce the risk of injuries to the driver during front collisions. The general principle of the collapsible steering column is similar to that of a traditional steering column, transferring the motion of steering wheels to ground wheels through steering gearbox, with an exception of the structural design.
