India ICT Sector Report 2019-2023
India's TV market is dominated by free-to-air services provided by state broadcasters. However, the market has a very large number of privately-owned cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV broadcasters. As of end-March 2018, the country was home to 875 private satellite TV channels, 324 private FM radio stations, and 216 operational community radio stations. There were 304 pay TV channels as of December 31, 2017, and five private DTH operators as of end-March 2018. The number of active DTH subscribers totaled 67.56mn as of end-December 2017. India is in the process of phasing out its analogue broadcasting services. Thus, while free-to-air still dominates the market, it is expected that pay TV will grow increasingly widespread in the country in the coming years.
