摘 要：Sickle-cell anemia is a disease characterized by the presence of sickle-shaped erythrocytes. While normal erythrocytes have a life span of 120 days, sickle-shaped erythrocytes die within 10 to 20 days. The bone marrow is unable to compensate for the excessive loss of erythrocytes, thereby leading to anemia. It is an inheritable disorder passed on across generations. The prevalence of the sickle-cell gene varies between different ethnic groups and geographical locations.
