Turkey is home to 14 motor vehicle producers and over 400 automotive industry suppliers. The automotive manufacturers have a total of 18 production plants in the country, located mainly in the northwestern and central parts of Turkey. The competition in the sector intensified in the late 1990s, when Toyota, Honda and Hyundai opened their plants in the country. The new entrants had to compete with the already established players Ford, Mercedes Benz, MAN, Renault and Fiat, the majority of which had formed joint ventures with local producers.
