Diabetes is a disease in which a person’s blood glucose levels (blood sugar) are higher than the normal. Blood glucose is the major source of energy and comes through the food we take. The Insulin hormone helps in the absorption of glucose from food into the cells, which will be used as an energy source by the body. Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas. When the pancreas does not generate enough insulin or does not use insulin properly, the glucose stays in the blood and does not reach the cells leading to diabetes. Diabetes affects 1 in every 4 people over 65 years of age. In adults, around 90−95% of cases are type 2 diabetes. People over the age of 54 years are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. People that are overweight and have a family history of diabetes are more likely to develop diabetes.
