State entity Albpetrol used to dominate the Albanian oil and gas sector, though the gradual liberalisation of the oil and gas market has seen its position largely reduced to a regulator. Albpetrol still controls oil deposits but has production agreements with foreign companies: Bankers Petroleum (now Geo-Jade Petroleum), GBC Oil, Sherwood International, Transoil Pennine Petroleum and Phoenix Petroleum. It also has a joint venture with Shell.
