    The two-dimensional traffic model of Biham, Middleton and Levine (Phys. Rev. A, 1992) is a simple cellular automaton that exhibits a wide range of complex behavior. It consists of both northbound and eastbound cars traveling on a rectangular array of cells, each cell equipped with a traffic signal. The traffic signals switch synchronously from allowing northbound flow to eastbound flow. By gating individual traffic signals, i.e. allowing individual traffic signals to break from synchrony in predetermined, deterministic scenarios based on the local state of traffic, the range for which the system self-organizes into a state of unimpeded flow is extended. On a 100x100 cell array, this additional intelligence enables accomodation of 200 cars more than the original BML model, without any reduction in average velocity.

    OH Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and picosecond (ps), broadband Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) are used for time-resolved temperature and time-resolved, absolute OH number density measurements in lean H2-air, CH4-air, C2H4-air, and C3H8-air mixtures in a nanosecond (ns) pulse discharge cell/plasma flow reactor. The premixed fuel air flow in the reactor, initially at T0 = 500 K and P = 100 torr, is excited by a repetitive ns pulse discharge in a plane-to-plane geometry (peak voltage 28 kV, discharge gap 10 mm, estimated pulse energy 1.25 mJ/pulse), operated in burst mode at 10 kHz pulse repetition rate. In most measurements, burst duration is limited to 50 pulses, to preclude plasma-assisted ignition. The discharge uniformity in air and fuel air flows is verified using sub-ns-gated images (employing an intensified charge-coupled device camera). Temperatures measured at the end of the discharge burst are in the range of T = 550 600 K, using both OH LIF and CARS, and remain essentially unchanged for up to 10 ms after the burst. Time-resolved temperature measured by CARS during plasmaassisted ignition of H2-air is in good agreement with kinetic model predictions. Based on CARS measurement, vibrational nonequilibrium is not a significant factor at the present conditions. Time-resolved, absolute OH number density, measured after the discharge burst, demonstrates that OH concentration in C2H4-air, C3H8-air, and CH4 is highest in lean mixtures. In H2-air, OH concentration is nearly independent of the equivalence ratio. In C2H4-air and C3H8-air, unlike in CH4- air and in H2-air, transient OH-concentration overshoot after the discharge is detected. In C2H4-air and C3H8-air, OH decays after the discharge on the time scale of 0.02 0.1 ms, suggesting little accumulation during the burst of pulses repeated at 10 kHz. In CH4-air and H2-air, OH concentration decays within 0.1 1.0 ms and 0.5 1.0 ms, respectively, showing that it may accumulate during the burst.

    The main content of gear design is the strength design, and the contact strength design of gears is the main heart of the strength design, because the stress and deformation of gears directly affect their safety and service life and concern whether vehicle transmissions work smoothly. Therefore it is necessary to perform a finite element analysis for the gear contact in transmission. Based on the contact characteristic of helical gears, a three-dimensional solid model was established by using the software Pro/E, and the contact stress analysis of gears was carried out by the software ANSYS Workbench. The stress and strain distribution contours of helical gears were obtained , and then the check of strength and rigidity was performed. Thus, it is convenient for designers both to test the strength of gears and to modify the size of gears.

    Based on the research of the CAN/LIN bus communication protocol,an automobile lamps diagnostic system based on the CAN/LIN bus is designed.After the completion of the software and hardware designs of CAN nodes,LIN nodes and CAN/LIN nodes,the faults of automobile lamps can be successfully diagnosed.LIN node collects light switches and the gateway controls the car light's status via detecting the data frame on the LIN bus.The design and complementation of CAN node,LIN node and CAN/LIN gateway was finished,which made it possible to detect failures in vehicle.

    At present,the traffic engineering and automation have developed,and the vehicle license plate recognition technology need get a corresponding improvement also.In case of identifying a car license picture,the principle of automatic license plate recognition is illustrated in this paper,and the processing is described in detail which includes the pre-processing,the edge extraction,the license plate location,the character segmentation,the character recognition.The program implementing recognition is edited by Matlab.The example result shows that the recognition method is feasible,and it can be put into practice.

    The proposed project aims to develop and test an intensive rehabilitative technology aimed at enhancing emotion regulation and reducing operator-related risk during civilian driving in OEF/OIF returnees burdened by severe driving-related distress and disability. This in-car technology will have two main components. The first is a system for measuring driving behavior (accelerator and steering wheel movements, lateral and longitudinal vehicle accelerations), visual attentional control, and autonomic arousal during actual driving. The second is a cognitive-behavioral intervention combining breathing retraining/heart rate variability biofeedback and cognitive reappraisal. Both components are compatible with on-road driving assessments currently performed by certified driving rehabilitation specialists (CDRS) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) on neurologically intact patients and those with mildto- moderate non-focal traumatic brain injury.

    Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is becoming one of the most popular transit services in the United States. BRT is a viable option for many cities and can offer commuters travel times comparable to those experienced in private cars. With about 100 miles of BRT service scheduled for deployment in future years, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) for the first time is facing questions related to BRT service. How will the service interact with private traffic. Will passengers accept unfamiliar features of the new service. We looked at the new BRT deployment in West Valley City, Salt Lake County, UT. Lacking BRT operational data from the field, but with a need to estimate operational challenges before the actual implementation, we used estimates generated from a microsimulation model. In addition, a series of surveys were conducted to gain feedback from the users of the BRT system. Results from the microsimulation runs show that the new BRT line leads to significant improvements of transit operations, with reductions of close to 20% in travel times and 40% in dwell times. An additional transit signal priority (TSP) feature is estimated to reduce travel times another 15%. The results showed that TSP has minor negative impact on side-street traffic and no impact or minor positive impact on main traffic. Results from the survey's show a high degree of acceptance of the new MAX buses among passengers and drivers. In short, the first BRT system in Utah can be qualified as another success story for the BRT systems in the United States.

    Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electrics are conservatively estimated to reach a 5 percent national car park by 2030. Drastic increases in the price of gasoline resulting from oil shocks or major shifts in national energy and environmental policy, however, may push Electric Vehicles (EV) quickly beyond this small share. Should such critical changes occur, EVs will be poised to move beyond their current niche to gain wider scale acceptance and integration into transportation and energy infrastructure. EV battery technology has not improved to the degree needed to achieve the same range mobility as conventionally fueled vehicles. Electric powertrain hybridization and incorporation of regenerative systems such as braking and flywheels are steadily, but only incrementally, improving EV fuel efficiency and range performance. New Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations in the next decade may drive the light-weighting or downsizing of some vehicle categories to achieve more aggressive fuel economy requirements, especially absent a breakthrough in vehicle battery technology. Light-weighting for battery electrics may be critical. Studies indicate that if primary vehicle mass is reduced between 40-59 percent, battery size and cost may be cut by nearly half without reductions in performance.

    The LRT system in Denver, Colorado, connects the downtown with neighborhoods to the North, but primarily stretches southwards, travelling in existing transportation corridors carrying freeways and a heavy rail system. Outside of the downtown areas, the siting of the LRT system alongside the rigid infrastructure that comprises the heavy rail system and the freeway systems severely inhibits pedestrian accessibility to the transit system. To help further understand how the level of accessibility varies across the system, a systematic pedestrian level-of-service index for each station within the system was created that takes into account the formal, as well as informal street networks. This inaccessibility is highly likely to limit the potential that this system may have to generate development near station located that is fully integrated with the LRT system. Primary data collected by surveying households across the metropolitan area revealed very little difference between car ownership rates and weekly VMT of survey respondents living within 12- mile of an LRT station and elsewhere in the metropolitan area. Differentiating between those station areas that were Park-and-Ride (that is, had a park-and-ride lot) versus Walk-and-Ride showed a more nuanced picture. Residents who live in Walk-and-Ride stations do have have lower VMT than those who live in Park-and-Ride station areas and those who do not live near an LRT station. This reinforces the fact that development needs to be more fully integrated with the LRT system in order to achieve some intended goals such as less dependence on automobiles.
