    The Maumee River watershed is the largest drainage basin that discharges into the Great Lakes. Although the watershed is largely a rural landscape, several major urban-industrial cities, including Fort Wayne and Toledo are located along the river. Many water quality concerns are present, especially non-point rural runoff that contributes significant amounts of sediment into the Maumee River. There is an important need to collect, organize and assess the available information on the watershed conditions and to better determine the status of the changes with land uses, crop rotation, and implementation of conservation tillage practices within this watershed. A partnership between the University of Toledo and US Department of Agriculture NRCS lead to several GIS and remote sensing products including annual land cover and crop rotations via remote sensing techniques, establishment of a Maumee Watershed Project Area GIS database, and providing educational and informational outreach with other project partners, resource managers, and the general public.

    This project presents five tools that were created for a geographical information system to estimate Annual Average Daily Traffic using linear regression. Three of the tools can be used to prepare spatial data for linear regression. One tool can be used to calculate a connectivity importance index for the streets of a city. The main tool can be used to conduct linear regression to estimate Annual Average Daily Traffic. The tools were created for ArcGIS 10 using open-source python scripting.

    Forest information collection plays an important role in the process of building modern forestry. This paper proposes a monitoring system-Sensing Forest System, based on the Internet of Things, 3G and 3D GIS, to make up for the shortcomings of traditional monitoring methods. Key issues, such as system architecture, design of wireless multimedia sensor nodes and data transfer process in the network, have been studied and presented, for obtaining real-time comprehensive forestry information, accurately, automatically and remotely, to lay foundations for applications of the Internet of Things in forestry.

    State Departments of Transportation, including the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), have long been moving towards the development and implementation of pavement management systems that would enable monitoring of the performance of their roadways, as well as assist transportation officials with maintenance budget allocation and planning decisions. Various past attempts focused on using the available performance databases as well as state-of-the-art concepts for the development of such systems. The unique characteristics of the state of Texas, the most predominant of which is the vast size of the managed pavement network--79,696 centerline miles of highways including 49,829 bridges--have made some of the decision support models and/or algorithms a challenge to implement. This report presents a new approach to the development of such a decision-support system with its focus on maintenance management for TxDOT. The new system is web-based and provides functional capabilities that allow transportation officials and engineers to make informed decisions regarding their budget planning and budget allocation for pavement maintenance management, fully utilizing available historical data. The developed system has successfully supported some of the TxDOT Districts in the development of their 4-year pavement management plans.

    Exploring new applications and services for mobile environments has generated considerable excitement among both industries and academics. In this paper we propose a context-aware recommender system that accommodates user's needs with location-dependent multimedia information available in a mobile environment related to an indoor scenario. Specifically, we propose a recommender system for the planning of browsing activities that are based on objects features, users' behaviours and on the current context the state of which is captured by apposite sensor networks. We present the features of such a system and we discuss the proposed approach.

    This chapter provides a comprehensive and chronological review of the procedures that were used to identify suitable sites for wetland and stream restoration in the Swan Creek and Tenmile Creek/Ottawa River watersheds within northwest Ohio. It includes an explanation of the datasets that were used to generate aerial photographic base mapping, evaluation of existing conditions within the two watersheds and the development of the GIS predictive model that was utilized to identify potential wetland and stream restoration sites and that were used to select the final 26 sites for the development of conceptual wetland and/or stream restoration plans.

    Anecdotal and empirical evidence has shown strong associations between the built environment and individuals travel decision. To date, data about individuals travel behavior and the nature of the retail environment have not been linked at the fine-grained level for verifying such relationships. GPS and GIS have revolutionized how we measure and monitor land use and individual travel behavior. Compared with traditional travel survey methods, GPS technologies provide more accurate and detailed information about individuals trips. Based the GPS travel data in the Twin Cities we analyze the impact of individuals interactions with road network structure and the destinations accessibility on individuals destination choice for home-based non-work retail trips. The results reveal that higher accessibility and diversity of services make the destination more attractive. Further, accessibility and diversity of establishments in a walking zone are often highly correlated. A destination reached via a more circuitous or discontinuous route dampens its appeal. In addition, we build an agent-based simulation tool to study retail location choice on a supply chain network consisting of suppliers, retailers, and consumers. The simulation software illustrates that the clustering of retailers can emerge from the balance of distance to suppliers and the distance to consumers. We further applied this tool in the Transportation Geography and Networks course (CE 5180) at the University of Minnesota. Student feedback reveals that it is a useful active learning tool for transportation and urban planning education. The software also has the potential of being extended for an integrated regional transportation-land use forecasting model.
