Prepregs are products composed of reinforcing fibers that are pre-impregnated with resins such as thermoset and thermoplastic resins. These products are largely cured under high temperatures and pressures and, hence, exhibit unique properties that befit a wide range of applications. Carbon fiber prepregs are made from carbon fibers with thermoset resins such as epoxy and phenols; and thermoplastic resins such as PEEK. Aerospace and defense, wind energy, sports, and automotive are the key application areas for carbon fiber prepregs.

Rubber is a polymer that is classified into two types, namely, natural rubber and synthetic rubber. Natural rubber is extracted from latex, which is a milky fluid emanating from the bark of rubber trees, while synthetic rubber is manufactured through chemical processes. The rubber is processed using various chemicals to improve its resistance to heat, sunlight, oxidation, ozone, and mechanical stress. Rubber processing chemicals are also an integral component used for vulcanizing rubber. They are classified into different groups based on their functions. The different types that are mainly used are antidegradants, accelerators, processing aids, anti-scorch agents, blowing agents, polymerization regulators, and shortstops.

A micromechanics analysis modeling method was developed to analyze the damage progression and fatigue failure of fabric reinforced composite structures, especially for the brittle ceramic matrix material composites. A repeating unit cell concept of fabric reinforced composites was used to represent the global composite structure. The thermal and mechanical properties of the repeating unit cell were considered as the same as those of the global composite structure. The three-phase micromechanics, the shear-lag, and the continuum fracture mechanics models were integrated with a statistical model in the repeating unit cell to predict the progressive damages and fatigue life of the composite structures. The global structure failure was defined as the loss of loading capability of the repeating unit cell, which depends on the stiffness reduction due to material slice failures and nonlinear material properties in the repeating unit cell. The present methodology is demonstrated with the analysis results evaluated through the experimental test performed with carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide matrix plain weave composite specimens.

Lyocell is a manufactured fiber that is derived from cellulose. Lyocell fiber is manufactured through a solvent spinning technique by the closed loop method, where cellulose experiences a chemical change. Lyocell fibers are widely used in textiles. Although lyocell is manufactured it is a natural fiber because it is made from wood pulp. Lyocell fiber is the strongest cellulose fiber when dry and known for its property of durability.

A membrane is a type of selective barrier that is used to separate or concentrate the feed stream as it passes through the membrane, which selectively allows some constituents to pass as others are retained on the surface of the membrane. The constituents that are allowed to pass are known as permeates and those that are retained are known as concentrates or retentates. Different types of membrane are used in the Food industry depending on their pore size. The types of technology implemented for membranes include ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and nanofiltration. Other membrane technologies such as membrane contractors, electro dialysis, and pervaporation are also used but their market share is low.
