Grid-connected photovoltaic installations grew by 40in 2009 compared with installations in 2008. California and New Jersey have the largest markets. Growth occurred in the residential and utility markets, but non-residential customer-sited installations did not change compared with the installations in 2008. Two small solar thermal electric plants were connected to the grid in 2009 with a combined capacity of 7 MW. The future prospects for solar thermal electric plants look bright, although developers are not expected to complete any new large plants until at least 2011. Solar water heating and solar space heating annual installations grew by 40in 2008 compared with 2007. Hawaii, California, Puerto Rico, and Florida dominate this market. Solar pool heating annual installation capacity fell by 1in 2008 following a dramatic decline of 15in solar pool heating capacity in 2007 compared with 2006. Florida and California are the largest markets for solar pool heating. The economic decline in the real estate markets in Florida and California likely led to the decrease in pool installations and thus the dramatic decline in capacity installed of solar pool systems in 2007.

DNA sequencing is defined as the process of determining the nucleotide order of any specific DNA portion.DNA sequencing translates the essential information for any living organism to survive and evolve. Hence, determining the DNA sequence is essential in genome research. The DNA sequencing process is used to define the sequence of specific genes, clusters of operons, entire chromosomes, and genomes. Most of the DNA sequencing process has been executed using the chain termination method. These sequencing methods have limitations in throughput, speed, resolution, and scalability. To overcome these barriers, next-generation sequencing technology, an important breakthrough in the field of genomics, has been launched.Next-generation sequencing technology can sequence millions of small fragments of DNA concurrently. In this technology a software program is then used to link the millions to billions of reads to reconstruct the complete genome sequence. Accuracy for this technology has increased to levels up to 99.99 percent. These technologies have higher throughput, sensitivity, and specificity than microarrays. Next-generation sequencing finds its application in whole genome, exome, and transcriptome sequencing that provide a high-resolution and global view of the cancer genome. Next-generation sequencing coupled with bioinformatics tools has revolutionized cancer research, diagnosis, and therapy. This technology helps to track and trace the spread of disease and foreign contaminants in drugs.

Modern storage systems employing quorum replication are often configured to use partial, non-strict quorums. These systems wait only for a subset of their replicas to respond to a request before returning an answer, without guaranteeing that read and write replica sets intersect. While these partial quorum mechanisms provide only basic eventual consistency guarantees, with no limit to the recency of data returned, these configurations are frequently “good enough” for practitioners given their latency benefits. In this work,we discuss why partial quorums are often acceptable in practice by analyzing the staleness of data they return. Extending prior work on strongly consistent probabilistic quorums and using models of Dynamo-style anti-entropy processes, we introduce Probabilistically Bounded Staleness (PBS) consistency, which provides expected bounds on staleness with respect to both versions and wall clock time. We derive a closed-form solution for versioned staleness and model real-time staleness for representative Dynamo-style systems under internet-scale production workloads. We quantitatively demonstrate why, in practice, eventually consistent systems employing partial quorums often serve consistent data.
