In Greek, apnea means breathless. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was first described as Pickwick's syndrome in 1837 by Charles Dickens. It was in 1956 that Sidney Burwell carefully documented the OSA case, rationalized the signs and symptoms, and distinguished this disease from others.
