Radiation is a form of energy emitted in all directions from a central source. The greatest radiation exposure is caused by natural sources in the environment. There are different types and sources of radiation that can be ionizing. The different types of ionizing radiation are alpha particles, gamma rays, and beta particles. Alpha particle: Alpha particles are positively charged and are produced from the decay of radioactive materials such as uranium, polonium, and radium. They can lead to damage to cells and DNA. Beta particle: Beta particles are negatively charged particles that are emitted during radioactive decay of carbon-14, hydrogen-3, and strontium-90. They can cause skin burns and are hazardous when inhaled or swallowed.
