Herpes is a contagious infection caused by the HSV. It is transmitted through sexual contact (infected fluids) or direct contact with infected skin (open wounds). It often manifests as pain and blisters around the mouth and external genitalia. Other herpes symptoms include itching, fever, chills, body ache, and pain and discomfort when urinating. HSV infection, commonly known as herpes infection, can be caused by either HSV-1 or HSV-2. HSV-1 infections are the most common as they spread by oral to oral contact, which can cause oral herpes. However, most are sub-clinical and asymptomatic. In symptomatic cases, the HSV-1 can cause mild to severe illnesses. Infections often manifest as cold sores but can also cause herpes sores, gingival aphthous ulcer, meningitis, encephalitis, corneal blindness, and neonatal herpes. The clinical manifestations of HSV-1 are determined by the site of initial entry of the virus.
