Peritoneal dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products from the blood, such as creatinine and urea, which are insufficiently removed by the kidneys in patients with renal failure. The dialysis fluid is introduced into and removed from the peritoneal cavity, and the peritoneum is used as the dialysis membrane. There are two main types of PD. The most commonly used type is known as continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). In this form of PD, patients have fluid in their abdomen 24 hours a day. At the end of each period of dialysis, patients need to change the dialysis fluid themselves. The other type is known as automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). In APD, a machine changes the dialysis fluid for the person, usually at night. APD treatment requires PD cyclers that are used to exchange fluids. The first cycler was invented in 1959, and since then, there has been intense competition among vendors to offer innovative PD cyclers with advanced features. This is boosting market growth and causing widespread adoption of PD among the patient population.
