A centrifugal compressor is a turbo or dynamic compressor with a radial design. It works by increasing the kinetic energy of the gas with a high-speed impeller and converting the kinetic energy into increased pressure in a divergent outlet passage. It is widely used for compressing large volumes of gas to moderate pressures. The main characteristics of a centrifugal compressor are a constant flow of fluids, constant-pressure functioning, and enhanced performance in extreme conditions such as changes in inlet temperatures. It is widely used in automobiles, oil and gas, natural-gas processing, refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).
