Transportation sector contributes to about 3-3.5% to the Malaysian economy and 3.5% to employment. At the same time, its indirect contribution to socioeconomic prosperity is measured by its ability to enable efficient movement of passengers and goods. The country has two ports ranked in the top 20 in the world in terms of container volume (Port Klang and Tanjung Pelepas), whilst KL International Airport is ranked 24th in the world in terms of total passengers handled, according to the country’s Ministry of Transport. AirAsia is one of the world’s leading low-cost carriers whilst Grab, now a key regional player in the e-hailing space, got its start in Malaysia. The government has been supportive of transport infrastructure development, and also aims to position the country as a regional distribution hub for air freight and transshipment hub for maritime freight, among others.
