A numerical study aimed to evaluate different preconditioners within the Trilinos Ifpack and ML packages for the Quantum Computer Aided Design (QCAD) non-linear Poisson problem implemented within the Albany code base and posed on the Ottawa Flat 270 design geometry is performed. This study led to some new development of Albany that allows the user to select an ML preconditioner with Zoltan repartitioning based on nodal coordinates, which is summarized. Convergence of the numerical solutions computed within the QCAD computational suite with successive mesh refinement is examined in two metrics, the mean value of the solution (an L1 norm) and the field integral of the solution (L2 norm).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Program provides health effects information on chemicals to which the public may be exposed, providing a critical part of the scientific foundation for EPA's decisions to protect public health. EPA has made several changes to this important Program over the past few years, streamlining the assessment development process, improving transparency, and creating efficiencies within the Program. In April 2011, the National Research Council (NRC) made several recommendations to EPA for improving the development of IRIS assessments. The NRC's recommendations were focused on the development of draft assessments, and the NRC was clear that their intent was not to delay assessments.

Efficient container handling system at the ports leads to reduced ship waiting time, increased productivity, cost reduction, and lowered harmful emissions to the environment. Terminal operators use the free flow of information from the ships to streamline containers that move from the vessel through the gantry cranes or quayside container cranes to the truck or the rail, and finally transport out of the terminal gate. The loading and unloading of containers from a starting position to a destination is conducted visually by experienced crane operators from inside the crane cab situated high above the ground for several hours daily. To improve crane safety and port productivity, we proposed an assistive user interface that integrates visual and haptic (force) feedback to assist the crane operator during container handling process. In this phase, the work focuses on the design and construction of a scaled testbed with visual and force feedback system to provide motion guidance. The visual feedback is provided by a camera and the force feedback is provided through a force-feedback joystick, which are integrated in MATLAB/Simulink. The motion guidance is provided as a force cue to alert the operator of surrounding objects and avoid possible collision. A preliminary experiment was conducted on the testbed to investigate the performance of the integrated system and the feasibility of the proposed technology. Initial results indicate the potential of the system in preventing collision and improved ergonomics; however, further user experiment will be needed.

With the purpose to minimize or prevent crash-induced fires in road and rail transportation, the current interest in bio-derived and blended transportation fuels is increasing. Based on two years of preliminary testing and analysis, it appears to be clear that polymeric additives may be added to diesel fuel to mitigate the formation of fine mists while allow regular flow through the fuel system. In this work, computer modeling was adapted as a fast and cost-effective methodology to identify the target range where polymeric additives could impact the shear-thickening effect on fuels. The Volume of Fraction (VOF) method was used within the commercial software Fluent to compute droplet behavior. Two new computational models, the combined SCA-DCA model with Jiangs correlation and the SCA-DCA model with exponential fitting, were proposed and imposed as the boundary conditions, showing a best-fit behavior with the experiment results.

The Product Manager (PM) for Meteorological and Target Identification Capabilities (MaTIC) developed a laptop-based version of the Meteorological Measuring Set-Profiler (MMS-P) that should replicate the capabilities of the latest currently fielded version, the MMS-P Block I Version 2 (B1v2). The laptop is a standard dual-processor VT Miltope CHS laptop. The B1v2 can generate all types of artillery meteorological (MET) messages. The PM funded the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to evaluate the MET accuracy of the laptop system, the Computer, Meteorological Data Profiler (CMD-P), as part of the overall Developmental Test (DT). The goal of this evaluation was to ascertain whether the CMD-P essentially generates the same messages as the B1v2. As in prior studies, we obtained Computer Meteorological Messages (METCMs) from the B1v2 and one of the CMD-Ps that was run in the same way and with the same starting time for assimilating the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports, and the other CMD-P was run the same but without the WMO soundings. The results show that the CMD-Ps assimilate regional upper air data equivalently to the B1v2s.
