Trucks in Europe account for nearly 22% of vehicular emissions, while making up less than 5% of the total vehicles on the road. Nearly 6.3 million trucks are in use
on the EU roads. Among them, nearly 96% run on diesel, about 1% run on petrol, and rest of the trucks run on other fuel types. In May 2018, the European Commission presented a legislative proposal for setting up the first ever CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles. A provisional
agreement was reached on the same, in February 2019. As a first step, these standards are proposed for large lorries, which account for 65-70% of all emissions
from heavy-duty vehicles.
