康复医疗学是一门新兴的学科，是 20 世纪中期出现的一个新的概念。它主要涉及到利用物理因子和方法（包括电、光、热、声、机械设备和主动活动）以诊断、治疗和预防残疾和疾病（包括疼痛），研究使病、伤、残者在体格上、精神上、社会上、职业上得到康复，消除或减轻功能障碍，帮助他们发挥残留功能，恢复其生活能力，工作能力以重新回归社会。康复医学是由理疗学，物理医学逐渐发展形成一门新学科。
