CNPC has decided to slow down the construction of refineries to ease the pressure from the slowdown of China’s demand for oil products. In 2014, the demand for pesticide will increase and the supply structure will continue to be improved in China. Amide herbicides are third largest types of herbicides based on sales volume after amino acid herbicides (including glyphosate and glufosinate) and sulfonylurea herbicides. In domestic or global market, the hottest products of amide herbicides are acetochlor, metolachlor and butachlor.

China’s synthetic rubber sector depends on ethylene cracking, and will be affected greatly by the lightweight trend. In China, C4, C5 and C6 components are mainly used to produce synthetic rubbers. Number of patent applications on technologies for recycling waste plastics grew nine-fold in China from 2000 to 2013, which shows that this field has become an R&D focus.

Anemic market demand coupled with the excess capacity of sectors like fertilizers and inorganic salt, will continue to drag down China’s petroleum and chemical industry, according to China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation’s (CPCIF) latest report, released on November 30.

China is now by far the most active country in developing new projects. CTL production in China, begun in 2009, has reached 29 000 bbl/ day in four plants and is expected to rise to more than 310 000 bbl/day by 2016.Sinopec has summarized its developing goals of coal chemical business as "133331" by 2020. Its six coal chemical projects are ongoing now.

China’s petroleum and chemical industry performed basically the same as expected in 2013. The nine major policies selected by CCR for analysis, cover system reform, excess capacity, emerging forms of energy, environmental protection and control of chemical hazards. In 2014, China's petrochemical industry players need to further raise public awareness of chemicals, promote green production, control air pollution, and emphasize personal health care field. 

The Asia-Pacific chemical industry continued to improve over the last six months, fueled by economic recovery, higher consumer spending and improved standards of living. The total profits of the big six chemicals firms in the region grew by 187.5% during the March to June period. The average stock price of the top six chemical companies by revenues as tracked by Mergent gained 8.7% over the period from June 14, 2013 to January 17, following signs of growth in the region and improvement across commercial construction and electronics end-markets. Threats of feedstock shortages, uncertainties about the economy and slower economic growth left most investors cautious. Nevertheless, joint ventures and acquisitions remained an option for some multinational companies that looked to the region to target new opportunities and optimize their business portfolios.

By 2017, the demand for butadiene will reach 4.2 million t/a in China, at that time the capacity will be 4.95 million t/a. In the future, the manufacture of SBR and butadiene rubber will still be two largest uses of butadiene, and the consumption of butadiene for the production of nitrile rubber will increase rapidly.
