Colombia is the fourth-largest economy in Latin America in terms of nominal GDP, and the third
largest country in the region by population, with 48.7mn people as of December 2016. Over the period
2011-2016, the trade sector performed well, with its gross value added (GVA) expanding at a CAGR of
3.5%, slightly below average GDP growth over the same period (3.7%) and reaching a share of 7.7% of
the country’s GDP in 2016. Trade activity remains concentrated in supermarkets, which accounted for
47.3% of total retail sales in 2016, followed by specialised stores (34.6%), shopping centres (16.9%), and
online retail (1.3%), according to EMIS Insights estimates. In line with global trends, online retail was
the fastest-growing channel over the years 2011-2016, achieving a four-fold expansion of its sales in
real terms during that period.
