    Advancements in hydrogen (H2) membrane separation are critical to allow the development of a viable H2 economy based on coal/biomass processing with CO2 capture. United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), in collaboration with Power+Energy, Inc. (P+E) and the Energy & Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota (EERC), therefore proposed to demonstrate palladium (Pd) based membrane separation of H2 from coal-derived syngas at the pre-engineering/pilot scale.

  • 2.有机硅复合材料的抗火能力实验研究

    When fire occurs in a concrete structure, it is hard to extinguish it because of its unique form and location, which results in a very high internal temperature of the maximum 1400℃.Due to the fine structural characteristic of concrete, the structure is likely to suffer fatal damages such as the reduction of resisting force and the damages to the cross section caused by explosive fracture.In this research, the author tested the effect of fire on structures by using fire boards with perlite-added silicone and confirmed that the fire resisting capacity varies according to the weight ratio of the addition agent, which shows what effect perlite has for the pyrolysis process.A fire resisting capacity test was also carried out by attaching a silicone composite fire board to a real size specimen.As a result of the test carried out by installing the fire boards with different thickness by section, most fire boards had excellent fire resisting capacity, and fire boards with 20mm or more thickness had also excellent fire resisting capacity.

  • 3.下一代聚合DWPF,MCU和盐石的溶剂混溶性评估

    The Office of Waste Processing, within the Office of Technology Innovation and Development, funded the development of an enhanced Caustic-Side Solvent Extraction (CSSX) solvent for deployment at the Savannah River Site for removal of cesium from High Level Waste. This effort lead to the development of the Next Generation Solvent (NGS) with Tris(3,7-dimethyl octyl) guanidine (TiDG). The first deployment target for the NGS solvent is within the Modular CSSX Unit (MCU). Deployment of a new chemical within an existing facility requires verification that the new chemical components are compatible with the installed equipment. In the instance of a new organic solvent, the primary focus is on compatibility of the solvent with organic polymers used in the affected facility. This report provides the calculated data from exposing these polymers to the Next Generation Solvent. An assessment of the dimensional stability of polymers known to be used or present in the MCU, Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF), and Saltstone facilities that will be exposed to the NGS showed that TiDG could selectively affect the elastomers and some thermoplastics to varying extents, but the typical use of these polymers in a confined geometry will likely prevent the NGS from impacting component performance. The polymers identified as of primary concern include Grafoil (flexible graphite), Tefzel, Isolast, ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), and fluorocarbon rubber (FKM). Certain polymers like NBR and EPDM were found to interact mildly with NGS but their calculated swelling and the confined geometry will impede interaction with NGS. In addition, it was found that Vellumoid (cellulose fibers-reinforced glycerin and protein) may leach protein and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) may leach plasticizer (such as Bis-Ethylhexyl-Phthalates) into the NGS solvent.

  • 4.含有高再生沥青路面与橡胶粉添加剂的沥青混合料混合物表征

    As the price of petroleum and material costs escalate and pressures of maintaining the sustainability of our environment, owners must continually find methods to decrease material costs and maximize their benefits. This paper presents the findings of laboratory characterization of HMA mixtures containing high reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content with crumb rubber (CR) additives. Five mixtures were examined in this study. The conventional mixture contained a styrene-butadiene-styrene, polymer-modified asphalt cement, Performance Grade (PG) 76-22M and no RAP. The second mixture utilized 15 percent RAP and PG 76-22M asphalt cement binder. The third mixture contains no RAP, 30 mesh CR additives blended (wet process) with a PG 64-22 binder. The fourth mixture contains 40 percent RAP, 30 mesh CR additives blended (dry process) with a PG 64-22 asphalt cement binder. The final mixture utilized 100 percent RAP with CR additives. Laboratory mixture characterization includes the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tests (Dynamic Modulus, E*, and Flow Number, FN), Semi-Circular Bend test, Dissipated Creep Strain Energy test, and the Modified Lottman test. In addition, Loaded Wheel Tracking, LWT, test was performed. Results indicate that the addition of CR additives as a dry feed to carry rejuvenating agents is promising. Mixtures containing high RAP content and CR additives exhibited similar performance as conventional mixture with PG 76-22M binder.

    The goal of the Sustainable Painting Operations for the Total Army (SPOTA) program is to significantly reduce the amount of hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions produced in coating operations, including adhesives application and removal. Adhesives and sealants account for approximately 5of U.S. Army-wide HAP emissions from surface coating operations. Materials conforming to Federal specification MMM-A-121 have been identified as one of the largest contributors. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate and validate the HAP-free alternative adhesive 3M-847 in place of the baseline materials 3M-1357, Clifton E-1293, and 3M-1300L adhesive for specification MMM- A-121. Based on 2003 data, switching from the baseline adhesives to the alternative 3M-847 would mean an Army-wide reduction of over 1000 lb/year of HAP emissions. This report summarizes the methods for successfully field testing adhesive on an aviation helmet (model no. HGU-56/P) edge beading preventative maintenance/repair and a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter nose door seal, conducted at Lowe Army Heliport, Fort Rucker, AL. An additional field trial was conducted at Anniston Army Depot, AL, on a Stryker infantry carrier vehicle driver s access hatch seal with successful results. In particular, technicians found that processing the alternative adhesives was similar to that of the baseline, and after 6 months, the adhesive did not have any signs of blistering, delamination (either cohesively or adhesively), substrate failure, or deterioration of any kind. Overall, the HAP-free 3M-847 adhesive was qualified for use on MMM-A-121 requisite substrates, such as vulcanized rubber (styrene-butadiene rubber, neoprene, and nitrile) bonded to unpolished steel, in addition to alternative substrates, such as silicone rubber and lightweight composite materials, showing a high versatility to the 3M-847 adhesive.

    This paper presents an experimental study of the performance of a single track device driving on dry, granular soils. A single-track test rig is used to empirically investigate track motion under controlled track slip and loading conditions on three natural dry granular materials:a dry sandy material with 100 um average grain size, a dry sandy material with 400 um average grain size, and a coarse gravel with 1 cm average particle size. Test conditions can be designed to replicate typical field scenarios for lightweight robots, while key operational parameters such as drawbar force, torque, and sinkage are measured. This test rig enables imposition of velocities, or application of loads, to interchangeable running gears within a confined soil bin of dimensions 1.5 m long, 0.7 m wide, and 0.4 m deep. The tested single track device has an effective contact area measuring approximately 25 cm x 10 cm and it is tested under three vertical loads 125 N, 155 N, and 190 N. Slip is varied within -50and +50during travel over the three soils. The track utilizes a flexible rubber belt equipped with 0.5 cm tall grousers. Experimental measurements are compared against well-established semi-empirical models, to assess the predictive accuracy of these models.

    This study explored the feasibility of using movable and reusable boarding and alighting (B&A) pads at bus stops. Potential design alternatives in terms of materials and structural support for these pads were evaluated. The review focused on the existing and alternative design materials, especially in applications other than for transit purposes, which could potentially replace the existing conventional cast-in-place concrete slab. An online national survey of bus transit agencies was conducted to determine how transit agencies are meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) bus stop accessibility requirements and to get feedback and related information on the potential use of movable B&A pads at bus stops. A total of 84 transit agencies from 31 states and Puerto Rico responded to the survey. From the responses, none of the transit agencies were found to be using movable B&A pads. The potential benefits for using movable B&A pads were identified to be lower installation and maintenance cost, ease of installation and use, quicker installation, flexibility, portability, and passenger accessibility. Some potential concerns included lower durability, strength, and stability; greater risk of theft; space limitations; safety; and aesthetics. Six materials (i.e., concrete/asphalt, metal, rubber, thermoplastic, composite, and wood), along with their commercially available products, were evaluated based on their structural performance, long-term durability, adaptability, life cycle cost, aesthetics, and safety and accessibility of transit riders with mobility devices. Out of the six materials, plastic lumber and metal were found to have the highest potential to replace the conventional design. The plastic lumber presents the most viable option but the metallic materials, even though more expensive, have more potential for quicker installation, which can benefit transit agencies with anticipated frequent route changes.

    The working condition of the condenser in power plant is an important factor that affects the economic operation of the power plant.Rubber ball cleaning is a main method to deal with the condenser fouling.The thesis,dealing with the problem of counting errors of rubber ball in the process of condenser cleaning,based on CPLD(Complex Programmable Logic Device) technology,designs a programme have rubber balls checking and counting automatically.The program takes use of the controlled laser sensors to count the number of rubber balls in every single pipe and the parallel processing capacity of CPLD,and have the number of different pipes counted and shown.Experiments have proved its constancy and accuracy.

    Flame retardant properties of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and its two kinds of microcapsules,MFAPP with a shell of MF resin and EPAPP with a shell of epoxy resin,were studied in styrene-butadiene-styrene rubber (SBS).The results indicate that the microencapsulation of APP leads to an increase in LOI in SBS compared with APP.When dipentaerythritol is incorporated into the SBS composites containing APP microcapsules,a further improvement in flame retardancy of the composites is observed.Moreover,thermal decomposition behavior and mechanical properties of the SBS composites are investigated.
