Alkaline batteries contain basic (alkaline) electrolytes of potassium hydroxide and the battery performance depends on the chemical reaction between zinc and manganese dioxide. The purity level of manganese dioxide used also decides the battery performance. These batteries are available with an output voltage of 1.5 V, but at a higher energy density of 6.5 Wh per cubic inch. Other battery chemistries use alkaline electrolytes, but with different active materials for electrodes.
